I have heard some dandy excuses in my 26 year motherhood career. Here’s a few that my children have offered when confronted about household chores that were left undone. They range from the ordinary to the bizarre.

“Mom, I thought you told Lucas to do that.”

“No, Mom, I didn’t really know that the potato chip bags don’t belong on the floor when the shelf is crowded.”

“But Mom, I had to leave the pan soaking for three days until you got home. It was hard.”

“Yes Mom, we did clean our room. We just left out the clothes, books and toys.”

“I had to leave these things out of the freezer to melt because there was no room for them, and it was too scary to take them to the freezer in the garage.”

Excuses! Why do these children give me so many lame excuses? Obviously, they have a problem with laziness. Their excuses are as flimsy as the sluggard’s quoted in Proverbs 22:13: “There is a lion outside!” or, “I will be murdered in the streets!

Then I walk into my own bathroom and see my toothpaste on the counter and my tennis shoes on the floor.

“But Lord, I was in a hurry this morning! The kids were making me late…and I can’t keep up with all this work…and besides, Lord, Doug left out his shaving cream too.”

I must face it. My excuses are just as weak as my kids’. I see myself in Proverbs 22:13 too.

Lord, I admit it. I still have some habits that need to be changed. Please forgive me for trying to change everyone else while I make excuses for myself. Help me, God, to lead my household with diligence and integrity.

Let’s meditate for 30 seconds on this verse: The sluggard says, “There is a lion outside!” or, “I will be murdered in the streets!” Proverbs 22:13

Each Wisdom Wednesday post is inspired by a verse from the chapter of Proverbs that corresponds to the posting date.

Oh, that was convicting…today I looked at my dusty floors and came up with all sorts of “good” reasons for avoiding the chore. Thanks for the reminder and the wisdom.
