Proverbs chapter 5 has surely been skipped by many a family devotion leader.  Too explicit for young ears.  Too sexual in nature.  Too uncomfortable for mom and/or dad.  Better wait until they are older, we reason.  Talking about being captivated by your wife’s love or being satisfied with her breasts is enough to make a grown woman blush.

But meanwhile, we have let the world display their version of love and breasts all over the Wal-Mart check out lines for our young children to view.  And we are watching good Christian marriages exploding all around us.  Pornography.  Adultery.  Homosexuality.  Lewdness.  Perversity.  As our ancient training manual warns us of the draw.

Our key verse for today should alert us all.  Proverbs 5:3:

For the lips of an adulteress drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil;

Temptation never comes at us sounding miserable and disastrous.  Are these the words we hear?  “Click here and destroy your family.” Or  “Pour out your heart to him, and you will end up leaving your husband.”

No, the voice of temptation drips sweetly in our ear.  “What hurt could one look be?  You probably need to understand what other men are struggling with.”  Or, “Your husband is so busy right now.  Just get a little help from that nice man at work.  He is so sensitive and kind, he probably has some good advice for you.”

And then we are hooked.  Led down the path of destruction.   Groaning with our flesh and body spent.   Coming to the brink of utter ruin.

Why? Because we did not hold Proverbs 5 as a lamp to our feet.

In 2011, I urge you to watch out for the lips of the adulteress dripping honey.  Press into the Holy Spirit like never before.  The enemy is roaming around looking for whom he may devour.  And I do not know about you, but I have had enough of my friends and neighbors falling!  Impress these words upon your heart….and the hearts of your children before it is too late!

Dear God, I ask you to alert me to the voice of deception that whispers in my ear.  Let me hear Your voice so loudly that I will recognize the voice of the adulteress and flee!  God have mercy on us for we have become an unclean people.  Filled with pride and then stumped as to how we fell away.  Lord, I humble myself on behalf of all my family.  We need you, Lord, to walk in the holiness You desire.  Cleanse us. Heal us.  And help us raise this next generation with the warnings of Your word in the first place in their hearts.

Now meditate for 30 seconds on this verse: For the lips of an adulteress drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; Proverbs 5:3
