Every time I get ready to leave for an Acquire the Fire event, my kids, especially Hannah, always ask the same thing: When you see ___________ (whichever band star is featured at that event) could you p-l-e-a-s-e get his autograph?

I just can’t see myself begging a celebrity for a signature, no matter how badly my kids want me to. I try to explain to them why this would be awkward.

“I am supposed to be a sophisticated, grown woman. You know—cool under pressure. Not rattled by rubbing elbows with the teen-culture famous. How would it look if I asked for an autograph? Totally unprofessional!”

Then a few weeks ago, Kalyn and I were in the hotel lobby preparing to catch an early morning shuttle back to the airport, when Flame (aka Marcus Gray) and his wife Crystal joined us. They were a delightful, down-to-earth couple who were obviously passionate about Jesus.

Whoa. This was big. Flame’s rap music had been taking our teen and pre-teen airwaves by storm. I couldn’t let this opportunity to provide a highly desired autograph just pass by.

So I reached for my notebook. I tore out a sheet of paper. And I thrust it squarely toward Kalyn.

“It will look much better if you do this, honey. And just think how grateful your sisters and brothers will be.”

We were having such a wonderful conversation about serving Jesus that it almost seemed to flow right into the conversation.

“So I know this is a little awkward…but could I get your autograph for my little sister? She just loves your music and …you are somewhat of a family hero.”

Good job, Kalyn! You did it.

With a little chuckle, Flame graciously signed his name on that scrap of paper. A wave of gratitude hit my heart. Thank God for real men and women of courage who are travelling and singing to my kids about Jesus. Living a godly life by example. And going deeper into the ways of God.

It seems Flame is much more than a flicker. He’s working on a master’s degree in biblical counseling so someday “when this season is over” he can serve the wounded in a local church setting.

Wow, God, You are good! Thanks for planting Your team right in the midst of my kids’ world.

But please, could You work it out so that I don’t have to ask for any more autographs?
